Review: The First Austin Grill Custom Burrito Shop

Last weekend my girlfriend and I ventured down to the Austin Grill Custom Burrito Shop for a bite to eat. The first one of its kind to open, resides in the heart of downtown Fairfax, minutes away from George Mason University.

Once inside, I felt like I was inside a more inviting version of Chipotle. The menu offers the standard burrito, the “un-burrito” (burrito bowl), tacos, salad, and salad wraps. The choices of meat were braised pork, grilled skirt steak, ground beef, slow cooked chicke, and grilled chicken. You also have the option of grilled vegetables. The fillings are standard, though the Custom Burrito Shop uses yellow cheddar, and their rice is akin to a Spanish rice.

I definitely think its worth trying, especially if you want something Chipotle-esque, but not Chipotle. Their serving size seemed to be a tad less generous than Chipotle’s, but that’s probably for the better. They do need to add larger cups for those of us with an unquenchable thirst. I didn’t have the opportunity to try their chips and chile con queso, but it sounds appetizing. Prices were reasonable.

All in all, while it didn’t blow me away, I enjoyed it enough to put in my rotation as an alternative to the “usual suspects”.
